The stylist bleached the top 3 inches or so (the regrowth that had never been bleached). Knowing from past attempts that violet semi-permanent haircolor would turn out nearly black, she applied a lighter purple.
The result isn't very obvious from the back.
But part my hair and look at those top few inches, and it's obvious that the lighter purple did not cover the reddish tones left from bleaching.
The virgin hair, which had easily gone to pale yellow when bleached, did indeed turn a medium bluish purple. But that was only the top quarter inch. Everything else turned... I don't even know what color to call it. It's rosy, pinkish, and/or brownish depending on the light.
It's definitely not bluish purple.
I wish I had never even tried to change my hair color. I have wasted time and money... and had to cut off several inches... and I'm left with ugly, freakishly multicolored hair. I want my long black hair back.
So sorry for you. Your adventure of horror makes me even more sure to never try to change my hair colour into lighter. I, too, have lots of red tones in my hair, I probably couldn't bleach them to platinum blond and would end up with weird browns on my head.

ReplyDeleteI have the opposite problem, my hair is strawberry blonde, and it will soak up any hair colour and not let it go. I remember back when I was in highschool, putting in one of those semi permanent colour, that says it washes out in 8 washes (my friend used it and it did indeed fade in that time), and it was in my hair for a solid 5 months. I don't really dye my hair (and I'm not touching it with dye, as I am donating it for wig making for cancer patients).
I do love the colour of my hair though, even though my super fair skin looks good with black hair, I just use wigs to let me have dreams of other coloured hair.

DeleteActually, my hair soaks up and holds color. The stylist used a light purple this time because twice before, medium purple turned out nearly black and would not fade. My hair still looks black, but there is no black dye on it, only bright purple and blue.
I've been reading this struggle for awhile now and I'm so sorry. *hugs* What if you let your hair grow out, micro-trimming it to help it grow faster, then tried lightening the virgin hair instead of bleaching, and then try dying it purple then? I don't know what else to do aside from that.
ReplyDeleteThanks. That's essentially what we had been trying the last few months, using permanent purple on the regrowth to avoid bleaching. But the lightening from the permanent purple unexpectedly brought out reddish tones.
DeleteMy virgin hair bleaches out surprisingly well. I could move forward with bleaching and dyeing the regrowth little by little... but I'm not sure I have any patience left.
Well, at least now you'll know that you tried everything and get it out of your head. It's frustrating, but hair grows back, you'll have long black hair in a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to give up because I have gone from black to purple before, so I know it can be done. But I damaged my hair with overbleaching, and I was trying to avoid damage this time.
DeleteOn the other hand, black is SO much easier. I dye the regrowth once a month, and I'm done. No further maintenance required.
That royally sucks. Guess you might have to settle for purple clip-ins.

DeleteI use Pravana Violet and it does start as a deep blackish color because it's ridicuously pigmented. Eventually, it'll fade to lighter shades of purple :)
ReplyDeleteThat's what should happen... but my hair doesn't fade normally. After the first try with the Violet, it took three months of intentional overwashing before there was any perceptible change in color.
DeleteI'm so sorry you've had so many problems with dying your hair! I've been slowly going grey for many years now and when I was young my hair would take any color of dye I wished to put on it. Now it refuses to dye at all. Basically any color I put on it washes out in a week. I even skipped trying for the bright colors anymore and gone for black, which every other person has to bleach it or cut it off to make a change, and same again one week and it's gone like I never did anything to it to begin with. It just won't hold any dye anymore at all. I've confused salons as well. One of my daughters is a beautician at a high end salon and she can't figure it out at all either. 😿 I keep hoping for one day to have no grey anymore...

DeleteIt hasnt been as frustrating as it sounds like yours has been... I guess I'm just lucky mine hasn't melted in the process of trying.. hopefully you find the dye that will do what you want in your hair soon..

DeleteI am so sorry reading this. When it comes to hairdye and the need of cutting off hair, i really know how it feels. My hair is currently growing out into a horrible light brown/blonde mixture. Just to get it healthy again befor i can even think of dyeing them again.
