On the risers, I used black and white adhesive shelf paper.
I liked the result... until I didn't really like it anymore. After a while, I just wasn't feeling the lilac. So I repainted the stairwell in the same grey, black and white color scheme as most of my house.
I used a black and white scroll print paper on the risers.
To complete the set of comparison pictures, the photobombing by Miniature Pinscher version 1 was reenacted by Miniature Pinscher version 2. ;)

DeleteAs much as I like purple I think the new version looks better. It'll probably age better as well, the black stairs won't show the dirt so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's a bit counterintuitive, but the black is actually worse for keeping clean. I don't use the stairs often, so they get dusty from disuse rather than dirty from shoes tracking dirt. But my house is full of black things that get dusty, so it's familiar territory. ;)
DeleteAs much as I like purple that is a lot of purple! I think the redo in black/white tones it down substantially. I have a Martha Stewart Halloween magazine that I kept and there's an old farm house done up very much like this and I love it! Cream or white and black are just so classy.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't do a dark purple because the stairwell isn't well-lit... and I just wasn't thrilled with the lilac anymore. The main living area of my house is done with grey walls, black trim, and white doors. I think it's a classy way to incorporate black, and neutral enough to be timeless. I still like it after seven years. :)
DeleteI think the white colour scheme makes it seem brighter and more open. Stairwells can easily seem dark because of how narrow they are.
ReplyDeleteIndeed. At night, this stairwell is extremely dark because it leads to the pitch-black basement, and there is only one light in the stairwell.

Love how the change in colors can make such a difference.. isn't it funny how any animal in the house is always curious as to what their human is up to?
ReplyDeleteWhenever I go to the basement, Indigo waits at the top of the stairs. Even if I'm only down there for 30 seconds, she acts super excited when I come back up. With her around, I can never feel unwanted. :)
