A Vast Expanse of Purple

Walls baffle me. More specifically, hanging things on walls baffles me. Many of my walls are bare because I cannot figure out what to hang or where to hang it.

The biggest dilemma is the vast expanse of purple wall behind my bed. I can't decide what to do with it. I like the iron headboard but feel it's not enough.

On the same wall is my nightstand. I'd planned to paint it black, but it's a bit too large after the addition of the chest of drawers/dog bed.

A small shelf might be better than a nightstand. With that, I would need a lamp(s) hung from either the ceiling or the wall.

But what to do with the wall?
I don't want a quote/words. (A decal wouldn't stick to the textured wall anyway.)
I don't have any photographs to hang.
Any art would have to be calming and in limited colors so as to preserve the restfulness of the room.
Beyond that... I'm open to ideas.

Fabric?
Lamps?
Candle holders?
???

What do you think?

  1. Oh boy. I'm starting to reach the same dilemma as you. Since we bought our home in July, we've been taking it slow with the remodeling, but our bedroom is going to be one of the first we tackle. I'm still debating on a color scheme, let alone artwork. Gah! Good luck with the decision.

    1. I think it's good to live in a house for a few months before doing any major remodeling. Good luck with your bedroom. :)

  2. Ohhhh, what a beautiful space that you can do so very much!!! I think cascading fabric would look amazing. I hung curtain panels (http://www.coffinkitsch.com/2015/11/matching-duvet.html), but the guest room is much smaller than your space.

    1. Thank you! It's a space I feel very relaxed and comfortable in. I like the idea of fabric or curtain panels!

  3. What about some sort of sheer netting hanging from the ceiling to form a canopy. The sheer would allow you to see the headboard while breaking up the space. You could feel like a goth princess while avoiding mosquitoes as well ;D

    1. Ha ha! Not too many mosquitoes here... but they can sneak up on you because they're teeny tiny. I'm used to enormous Georgia mosquitoes that you can see and hear coming at you. :P

      Voile might be nice... hmm...

  5. How about a black and white abstract art piece?

    1. That would fit in well with the color scheme - all the other accents are black and white.

  6. If it were me, I'd put a rectangular piece of damask fabric up there. Gorgeous purple colour

    1. Oooh, damask. :D I do love damask!
It's my favorite shade of purple. (It's a bit less blue than it looks in the pictures.)

  7. I'd put curtains behind the bed, personally. Like, treat the space behind the headboard as a window and put up curtains that are pulled open so that the drapes hang on either side of the bed... I want to do that for my own soooooo badly lmao.

  8. Wow your room is already a lot more stylish than mine! I have never been great at the home decor thing! I think I like people's ideas about fabric/ curtains on the wall! I have wanted a four poster bed since I was a kid, so fabric kind of suggesting that a little would be great!

I know what you mean about the art, I never want spooky art in the bedroom, it's not relaxing, that's where the doggie pictures and things go!

    1. I used to have a canopy bed and loved it. :) This room is very small, though... I don't even use the footboard on the bed. So yeah, fabric would fit in well.

I'd like to do silhouettes of my dogs. :)

  9. I would agree with Meagan Kyla and vote for some drapes, either in black velvet 8how great a cliche! ^^) or something light and airy...

  10. When I first started seeing my boyfriend he had a throw, with a small hold cut out for the light, draped on his ceiling. It made the room feel really cosy. You could also fix something to the wall to display jewellery or accessories.

  12. I love the idea of hanging lamps...
The middle of the wall asks for a painting.
We also have an oval mirror above the bed in a flat that we rent

  13. i would put an elaborate candle holder. I have a wall sticker of a tree and ravens over my bed. I got it at Jo-annes at Halloween and it sticks to my textured wals fine.

    1. I do love candles! :) Yes, now that I think about it, a wall decal would probably stick just fine. I've had bat decals on my car for almost four years.

  14. you could do a wall painting, maybe a swarm of bats or a large tree (celtic knot style or realistic) or papercut-silhouettes or something of the sort? combined with a few candleholders or crystals as accents it can make a beautiful wall decoration. are you on pinterest? if not, you have to! there are so many inspirational pics up there if you search for goth wall decor or goth wall painting or so.

  15. A beautiful gothic mirror put up sideways, maybe? The frame can't be too thick or it might look crowded, but I got a plain oblong mirror for our dining room and it really made all the difference.

    1. Hmm... hadn't thought about a mirror. It would help bounce light around the room as well.
