Hairstyle Makeover: Bye-Bye, Long Hair

Long hair, I have enjoyed having you... but it was time for you to go.

A fond farewell!

With the weight gone, my hair's natural wave springs up a little. I didn't have any proper styling products on hand; nonetheless, it dried rather wavy with a lot less frizz than I expected. It sure behaves differently in Colorado's dry summer than it did back in Georgia's muggy nightmare.

The cut includes some long layers. The overall length is a couple inches longer than I'd originally had in mind. The stylist wanted to be a little more conservative on the first go, which totally makes sense. She can always cut it shorter and/or add more layers next time.

And there will be a next time with her. She was AWESOME. :D She was super friendly and very tolerant of my nonstop anxiety-induced babbling. Before she even picked up the scissors, she looked closely at the photos I brought in and we discussed my hair care and styling habits. Then she kept up communication during the cut to make sure I was getting what I wanted. She did a great job on the cut. Despite the cowlick I have in front, she got my bangs exactly right. :D

I am glad I got the cut. I've washed it twice since yesterday afternoon just for the novelty of having it dry naturally in less than five hours. :) I really like the option of wearing it wavy. There is just one problem -- I have to learn how to style it!
What is going on with my face here? My left eye isn't THAT much higher than my right.

For today, it's a messy ponytail. Not the height of style, but wow, it's nice to be able to get my hair up off my neck and back with just one little ponytail holder. Especially in the heat of summer!

Now I'm off to the store to find the right styling product for wavy hair. They do make such a thing, right? It's been years since I used anything but heat protection spray...

  1. OMG,it looks fantastic, Bane! If you hadn't said you didn't style it, I would have thought you did. The waves look perfect just as they are - if I were you, I wouldn't even bother learning any new hairstyling tricks, although I guess that might be kind of fun. :D

How lucky you got a great stylist for this major change! I think ones that actually listen to what you're saying are few and far between. I was forced to cut my own bangs just this week because I have yet to find a stylist I like. And trust me, they don't look anywhere as good as yours do. ;o)

    1. Thank you! I did blow dry my bangs in the usual way, and I made an attempt at styling the rest into a reasonable shape. There will be a learning curve because my hair reacts so differently in this dry climate. The biggest hurdle will likely be getting past my mistaken idea that wavy = messy, and getting comfortable with a new style.

I am thrilled (and frankly, surprised) to have found a good stylist. You're absolutely right -- most stylists don't listen to what you're saying. They plop you in the chair, grab the scissors, and start hacking away. That rarely ends well.

This stylist made a point of listening and asking questions until she was sure she understood what I wanted. I was impressed. And best of all, she offers free bang trims! :D

  2. I LOVE it! Seconding the Insomniac - the waves look very natural, and suit your face probably more than long hair. I agree layers might be an idea to try out (you do have a lot of body to your hair anyway, so I can understand her not doing this immediately), but it definitely looks great as it is.

Shine serum would probably do an excellent job, but despite also having wavy hair I am a terrible person and barely do anything to try and tame it, so I have nothing else to add. Enjoy experimenting! :)

    1. Thank you! The shorter hair is definitely a better style for my long, narrow face. I'll experiment with it for a while, and I always have the option of adding more layers.

  3. The haircut is great and you picked a great stylist. But you pull it off not just because it is a beautiful cut, but because you are beautiful. Congrats on being brave enough to give it a try.

    1. Thanks! Yes, it's MUCH lighter. I keep swinging my head around to marvel at how much movement my hair has now. :)

  6. Oh it has a bit of a wave and a little but of volume! That looks really nice!

Ha ha I know what you mean about hair being slow to dry! mine isn't much longer than that but it takes hours to dry, the other night I had to go to bed with wet hair and it's winter! Argh.

    1. Thank you! People would sometimes comment that it must take me a long time to wash my hair or that it must be a chore to style so much hair... but I've never minded the washing or conditioning or flat ironing. It has always been the drying that I hate. Having it air dry in a couple of hours or blowing it dry in 10-15 minutes will be soooo nice!

  7. I absolutely love the natural wave of your hair and the frame the bangs make on your face! Gorgeous, let the fun begin!

    1. Thank you so much! I used to hate the texture of my hair, but I think with the right cut (and low humidity!), it might actually be a plus.

  8. Fabulous and sexy! I love the cut and I love the wavy layers. That cut shows your hair's wavy curls to their best advantage. I'm glad you found a good stylist that listened to you and gave you a good experience.

    1. Thank you! :D I think the cut is going to work well with the wave, which is awesome. It's much easier when I'm not having to fight my hair's natural texture.

  10. It looks different from the old style, but a lot more versatile! It suits your face and I can agree with the other commenters that your "unstyled" look seems really pretty already!

    1. Thank you! It will definitely be more versatile. I can wear it wavy or blow it straight, and I'll be able to use all the pretty hair ornaments that were not strong enough for the weight of the longer hair. :)

  11. Your 'old hair' was amazing, I wish mine looked like that, but this new cut is also pretty, I'm sure it's beer for your hair.
It's so hard to find a good hairdresser who listens, I left so many because their scissor wentwild even if I asked to just cut the tips...alright, I admit it, I dislike hairdressers ever since...:)

    1. Thank you. I will probably miss my long hair on occasion, but I was really ready for a change.
I have had so many bad experiences with hairdressers that I have little trust in them. I was quite anxious going in for the cut yesterday!

  14. Wasn't sure before, but seeing it wave up like that... I have the exact same hair!

The new cut looks really lovely on you, and I'm glad you found a good stylist :)

  15. I love the new hair! Also- speaking as someone who has medium-length wavy hair- I find that a good mousse works really well when you want to go slightly more wavy/curly.

  16. OMGs! I am working towards getting my hair to the length it was before. I'm glad you are happy with your new hair style, but I just couldn't do it. To be honest, I was surprised the stylist could do it. Your hair was IMHO, Perfect. Again, not meaning to sound negative or anything about the current style, if you are happy that is ALL that matters.

    1. There were times in the past when I had a real emotional attachment to my long hair, and I would have been very upset to cut it. I didn't feel that this time.

The last time I had my long hair cut off, it was a (bad) emotional decision, and the stylist asked me "Are you sure?" about 50 times. :P But this time, I think the stylist could tell I'd made a rational decision and she didn't question it.

  17. Believe me as a girl with a mass of hair I know the pain of having to use practically industrial hair bands even if it's in twin tails.
