The Choice is Made
I have chosen to leave the company. That's right, I've decided to intentionally make myself unemployed. There might be more than a little insanity in that decision.
There were many, many variables to consider. In the end, it came down to this: I want my freedom. I feel trapped in the monotony of the routine, in the daily commute, in the requirement of sitting in my stuffy closet of an office for nine hours a day. I want out of this box.
There are risks, of course... that I won't be able to find work later, that I'll run out of savings, that the isolation will bring on depression, that I'll die and my poor dog will starve because no one knows I'm dead... but I will take those risks in exchange for my freedom.
Be it for good or for bad, my life is about to change drastically.

Congrats on the unemployment! As I lovingly tell my friends who quit their jobs: You are so Punk Rock! I'm sure everything will go well with minimum hiccups.
ReplyDeleteGood luck - you've made a brave decision! But if it makes you feel good, and your gut instinct is that it's right thing for you, then it will all work out in the way it's supposed to ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks! My gut tells me it's the right thing, and after countless hours of calculation and planning, my head agrees. :D
DeleteCan't put a price on happiness.
ReplyDeleteAin't that the truth!
DeleteIf your dog's smart it wont starve for long... what with the corpse and all...
ReplyDeleteSorry I can't contain my morbidity >.<
Ha ha! That's an excellent point!
DeleteGood luck, my friend! And congratulations on such a huge decision. I agree with everyone above: you absolutely MUST go with your gut. It will always guide you towards where you are meant to be. I really, really do believe that. Be brave and LEAP!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Looking back, I realize that many of the best parts of my life happened because I took a risk. A little bravery can have a big payoff. :)
DeleteGood luck! I hope you find somewhere else that makes you truly happy! Maybe you could sell some of your awesome sewing and DIY things as a job!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I've considered giving an etsy shop a go, or maybe trying to sell some pieces at the local flea market.
DeleteBrave girl! I would love to take that descision myself, so I'm a little envious. I hope you'll find other things that pays you well both in mind and money :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope so, too. :)
DeleteGood luck, I think you will find after the "what the hell did I do" subsides you will feel relief. I did the same thing with an office job about 4 years ago and now I've been working towards what I really want to do...and I'm doing it! Grant it I'm not rolling in $$, had my bouts of depression, but happiness was always a factor.
ReplyDelete(Sorry this is a novel)
Good for you! The luckiest people are those who can make a living doing something they really want to do. That trumps money any day, in my opinion.
DeleteI'm so proud of you and happy for you! Yay!
ReplyDeleteI believe you've made the right decision. I've always said that a high salary/benefits package don't count for much if you're not happy. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIndeed. A big salary doesn't do you much good if you're too stressed to enjoy anything you spend it on. And I use my health insurance almost exclusively for antidepressant medication and therapy, which I need mostly because of work stress. How twisted is that?! :P
DeleteGrats on the choice; those decisions are always tough as hell!! I wish you tons of luck with the organizing business--heck once you get yourself set up, *I* will sell you to all my COS people if you don't mind the hour drive!
ReplyDeleteAlso, your dog would totally eat you first, so you wouldn't have to worry about her/him for at least a week or so.
I hope your decision has made you lighter and does not bring depression with it.

Sweet! My current commute is 45 minutes... and that takes me to a stressful job. An hour to an enjoyable job would be much preferred. ;)
DeleteYes, I hadn't thought of that. And she's tiny, so she could feast on me for quite a while.
I definitely feel lighter. As long as I don't let myself become a hermit, I should be okay.
Tough decision for sure, but I bet you never regret it. Good luck to you, Bane! :o)
ReplyDeleteYep. Even if I fail, I won't regret taking the risk. Thank you!
Deletebest of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteCongradulations! I hope it goes well for you, and it works out.
ReplyDeleteCongrats and good luck! Will you start being an organiser while looking for a permanent job?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, ideally I can find a part-time job to pay the bills while I try to build my organizing business.
DeleteDO IT! And never look back. An exciting future with endless opportunity is ahead of you!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've finally dropped the heavy burden and can now stride unencumbered into the future. :)
DeleteI feel like this is the best choice! You will do awesome in whatever path you choose.
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteWow, good for you, it's a well thought out decision I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteLife is too short for regrets, just keep going forward, you will succeed :)
If you do open an esty shop do let us know... and please please have international postage!
Good luck x
It's well thought out... or more accurately, overanalyzed to within an inch of its life. ;) But that's why I feel totally comfortable with the decision.
DeleteMy wonderful readers will be the first to know if I open a shop. :)
Thank you!
Good luck! Please do try not to die, I would be very sad. I'm sure you will do awesome and find something you love to do!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Rest assured, I try every day to not die. ;)
